The Zoolight continues during the pandemic to cheer up the families and add that extra bit of shine for the holiday.

The Calgary Zoolights are open to the public from Nov. 20, 2020, to Jan. 3, 2021, with safety protocols to ensure the safety of visitors amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Zoolights tradition has continued for 24 years in Calgary, and Alison Archambault, director of brand engagement of the Calgary Zoo said this will be “the best year of lights.”

“Now more than ever, it's important that Calgarians have a little bit of magic and gather with your immediate family in a way that maybe they've done in the past to enjoy some traditions, to see some beautiful lights, and to be safe while they're doing it,” said Archambault.

Masks are recommended everywhere in the zoo but mandatory in the buildings, and people will need to purchase their tickets online in advance.

“We come here every year,” said Derek Penner, a father of three children.

“The kids really enjoy it, and it’s just a good opportunity for everyone to have some fun together,” said Penner.

The Zoolights hour has also been extended to open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. to limit the number of people in the park so that they could spread out and be safe with physical distancing.

I will never forget when we opened back on May, 23, this little boy ran up to me, jumped up and down, and he says ‘that was the best day ever!’

"There are lots of things that COVID has taken from us, but the ability to enjoy an afternoon or an evening at the Calgary Zoo, to learn more about wildlife conservation, and how you can be a part of it is really resonated with people."

This year’s Zoolights features more themed areas including the Polar Wonderland, Enchanted Gardens, and Journey to Wechiau.

Hot chocolate and popcorns are also available at the Snack Shack.

“It’ll be nice if we can see the animals, too,” said Ahmet Aral, a Zoolight visitor.
